UN warned about threat of increase in number of hungry in West Africa

The deterioration of the situation with the spread of the new coronavirus could trigger a sharp increase in the number of hungry people in West Africa to 50 million people, said the coordinator of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), which oversees the region, Kumba Sow, on April 27, reported on the FAO website. Sow said that approximately 11 million people are currently starving in West Africa. She believes that the pandemic could cause food prices to rise, leading to even greater shortages. The Coordinator noted that FAO was going to help farmers affected by the pandemic to provide social protection to the inhabitants of the region. In addition, the organization plans to monitor the smooth operation of markets. According to the news agency, on April 21, David Bizley, Executive Director of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), stated that the world could face mass famine against the background of the coronavirus pandemic if food security measures were not taken.
