Waiting for the invasion: how South Ossetia separated from Georgia

On September 20, 1990, a declaration on state sovereignty was adopted in the South Ossetian Autonomous Region of the Georgian SSR. The formation of the South Ossetian Soviet Democratic Republic as part of the USSR was proclaimed. In response, Georgia, which considered South Ossetia part of its territory, introduced troops into Tskhinval. In January 1991, war broke out in the region.
