UN Secretary General seeks lifting sanctions on Iran
On April 15, UN Secretary-General Stefan Dujarric's spokesman said that António Guterres remained in favour of lifting unilateral sanctions on Iran amid the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. This was reported by the Iranian agency IRNA on April 16. He made comments in response to a question from an IRNA journalist about practical measures by the UN Secretary General against the insistence of the US authorities, despite the fact that he and representatives of other organizations have repeatedly stressed that sanctions have had a negative impact on the capacity of countries, including Iran, to combat the coronavirus pandemic. The UN Secretary-General's position on sanctions is clear as he reiterated that sanctions should be lifted in connection with the coronavirus outbreak, Dujarrick said. The Islamic Republic of Iran has repeatedly insisted that U.S. actions undermine countries "struggles against the rapidly spreading disease. Recall that earlier US President Donald Trump announced that the United States would stop funding the World Health Organization (WHO), which the president accused of mismanagement and concealment of the spread of coronavirus.
