Chinese Xinjiang increased foreign trade by almost a third


The Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in northwestern China has ensured an increase in foreign trade for three consecutive months since June, Xinhua News Agency reported on September 23. In August, the total volume of imports and exports of the region in monetary terms exceeded 15.6 billion yuan (about $2.3 billion), which is 31.5% more annually, the customs of Urumqi, the capital of the region, said. Xinjiang's total exports are dominated by mechanical, electrical and labour-intensive products. Exports of this group in August increased by 39.9% year on year to 11.76 billion yuan in August. Imports of the region in August, which mainly consists of energy, reached 3.87 billion yuan, which is 11.2% more than in the same period a year earlier. In June and July, the region recorded 10.6% and 32.9%, respectively, growth in foreign trade in the region. In the first eight months of the year, Kazakhstan became Xinjiang's largest trading partner, providing about 50% of the total regional trade. The region also increased trade with India, Indonesia, Vietnam, Italy and Saudi Arabia.
